Xbox One Being Sold Without A Kinect Is Unlikely

Posted on February 24, 2014 by James Conway

News: Shortly after the announcement that the Xbox One would be getting a $50 price cut in the UK, Microsoft United Kingdom marketing director Harvey Eagle made it clear that the Xbox One will always be sold with the Kinect.

"We're in it for the long haul," Eagle said to BBC. "Kinect is absolutely integral to Xbox One."

Rumors had been floating around that a Kinect-less version of the Xbox One might be in the works, which would be much cheaper than an Xbox One with a Kinect. Each Kinect unit costs $75, even being sold without one, the Xbox One would still be more expensive than the PlayStation 4.

Me: Going down with the ship. Ride or die. Til death do us part. Microsoft is not letting the Kinect go.

I think I'm speaking for all Xbox One owners when I say that the Kinect is a useless add-on that no one gives a flying fuck about. Selling the Xbox One without it would be the best course of action for Microsoft right now. Why they seem hell bent on making the Kinect "integral to the Xbox One" is beyond me.

I know Microsoft wants the Kinect to be a success and not a gigantic waste of time, resources, and money, which it is, but nobody wants the god damn thing. The Kinect is also using up a portion of the CPU that can't be accessed by developers. So there is untapped potential inside the Xbox One and the Kinect is wasting most of it.

The only times I can honestly say that I've used my Kinect is when I ask it to record something, even then it barely works. I'd say on any given day there is a 50/50 chance that the Kinect hears/understands what I'm saying. That's great, my Kinect has the same odds of hearing me as a coin landing on heads does or me buying a PlayStation 4.

Microsoft needs to take a long hard look at their $499 gaming console and start thinking of ways to reduce the price to $400. I know something they could cut out that costs $75 and is using up a portion of the CPU. I'll give you a hint, it rhymes with Connect.
